WHY A FREE BLOG ISN’T REALLY FREE

Often times those looking to start a blog want to do so for free, they want to test the waters and get set up without paying anything. Which makes total sense given you’re new to blogging and we’re all trying to save a few dollars here and there.

But what if I told you that FREE never really means FREE.

You see there are two main ways to get your blog up and running. First is to use a ‘free service’ such as blogger.com or wordpress.com, where you choose a name for your site and you put all of your trust and hard work in the hands of another person.

There are several downsides to ‘free blogging’:

1) You end up with a web address like this: http://joescatblog.wordpress.com.

This is because these blog hosting services are all using the same primary domain name, which in this case is wordpress.com.

This not only looks unprofessional but there is no way that a fan will remember this domain name to revisit you in the future.

2) You never actually own your blog or it’s content

These free blog providers have the power to shut down your blog at any time, for any infringement they see fit. I have known people to lose years of work they put into a blog all because the free blog hosting service didn’t like something they said or did.

3) Your ‘free blog’ is open to hackers and others stealing your content and breaking your blog

As this is a free service, their support is typically slow at best, so should you find yourself under an attack by hackers, don’t expect them to come to your aid anytime soon.

4) You are not free to do as you please with your blog

Installing WordPress on your Hosting Account

There are several ways to install WordPress on your account

your 1 click installation/Fantastico in your Hosting Control Panel,

Fantastico is a lovely tool that comes with almost any hosting subscription. It allows you to easily upload various scripts and codes to your website without having to deal with tons of steps and having to deal with cpanel.

To use Fantastico, you’ll have to log back into your hosting’s cPanel. Scroll down to the Software section, and you’ll see a smiley face icon called Fantastico De Luxe. Click on it to get started.

Once you log in, find the link for Fantastico. This will appear in various locations on different hosting businesses. The link may appear something like this:

This is what Fantastico looks like when it first starts up. You should see various options on the left-hand side, but the only option you’ll need is the WordPress option. Click on the WordPress option to get started.

Clicking on the WordPress option will lead you to this screen. To start installing WordPress, all you have to do now is click new installation.

Now, all you’ll have to do is fill in the information that Fantastico asks of you, and your site will be set up in no time. On this page, you’ll be asked for your site’s basic configuration information.

Use the drop-down menu in the top of the screen to select the domain you wish to install WordPress on. If you want to use the domain solely for your blog, leave the field underneath the drop-down (Install in a directory) blank.

Otherwise, enter the name of the directory you wish to install it in.
Subsequent, add a username and password. This is what you will use to log in to your weblog admin.

I suggest NOT using “admin” as your username, simply because this is what most people use.

It will make your blog easier to hack, which is clearly not a good idea.

Your admin nickname will be the name that will appear as the author of all of the posts you make. If you’re branding a specific name, you will probably want to put your name there instead of utilizing “Admin”.

Some website developers prefer to install WordPress personally to obtain a custom install of the components. Others should manually set up because their hosting company doesn’t have the “1-click-installation” capabilities. Follow these fast and simple steps to set up WordPress manually on your server.

Step 1:

Download WordPress http://wordpress.org/download and save it on your pc.

Step 2:

Create a fresh folder on your desktop or someplace on your pc and unzip WordPress folder.

Step 3:

Find the PHP file  wp-config-sample.php and change the name to: wp-config.php. You can certainly do this by right-clicking the PHP file and selecting the choice “rename”.

Step 4:

Open up the wp-config.php (with Notepad or Dreamweaver) and change below mentioned lines:

WordPress Dashboard

The WordPress Dashboard is like management central for all your blogging madness. You management everything about composing blogs and the seem-and-feel of your blog site from here. To visit your DashBoard please visit yourdomain.com/wp-admin/.

Now that you have installed WordPress for your site, you will want to login to the Dashboard. Type the URL yourdomain.com/wp-admin/ into your browser and put in your login when you see the login screen.

When you go to your WordPress dashboard first time, it looks very complicated but it’s not very difficult to use. First, you need to know left-hand side options:

The dashboard is the main face of your website that will tell you each and everything about your website, like how to post you have made, Comments by your visitors, Stats and Pages.

Posts in simple you can call it an article, whenever you want to write an article or post about anything then you use this application and simply create your articles.

Pages creating procedure is the same as posts but totally different from one another, Pages application is mainly used to create four main pages of your website About Us, Contact Us, Privacy Policy and Declaration.

Comments by clicking on this application you can approve or disapprove your comments of your visitors.

Appearance is like theme of your smartphone, from this you can manage your website theme and even you can upload your website themes that you have purchased from other websites.

Plugin is simply the add additional application to your website.

Settings, you do not have to change any settings of your website just be like that.

Next, we want to make some adjustments to the “Permalinks Structure” of your site. You do this by choosing Permalinks on the left-hand menu also. Set your permalinks structure to look like the screenshot we have provided below.

Making this change to your permalinks makes your URL of your website pages more search engine friendly. The URL to your pages will look like:  The URL to your pages will look like: http://www.yourdomain.com/sample-post instead of http://ww.yourdomain.com/?p=123 .

Extend Your Website using WordPress Plugins

Plugins are a small piece of tools for expanding your newly created website.
It Does not come to build in but installing them can allow you to create new feature and functions for your website.

How To Install A New Plugin

There are a few ways that you can install a WordPress Plugin, but the easiest way to install one is by using the WordPress Directory. In this section, I will show you how to install a plugin by using the directory.

Sign into your WordPress Admin Panel by typing your blog address followed by a forward slash (/) then type wp-admin. (eg. yourblogname.com/wp-admin)

A login screen will appear.

You will then see your WordPress Admin Dashboard. Look in the list down the left-hand side until you see a tab called Plugins. Hover over the plugins tab and then click on “Add New” in the drop-down menu that appears. You will then be taken to a page where you can search for WordPress plugins.

There are more than 30000 plugins and almost all of them are free. If you want to add a photo gallery then search the photo gallery.

After searching for installing is easy all you need to do is install and activate it.

In the search bar type in the name of a plugin you wish to install. Then click search plugins. You can search for a specific plugin by name or you can do a general search to find plugins related to your search term.

You can view details of the plugins by reading the little snippet that appears beside every plugin or you can click on the Details link located under the plugin name if you would like to see more information. When you are satisfied that you have found the plugin that you want, click Install Now under the plugin name.

When your plugin is installed you will be taken to a new page that will say “Successfully installed the plugin… (name of a plugin)” Underneath of that, it will say Activate Plugin | Return to Plugin Installer. Click on Activate Plugin. Now your plugin is activated and ready to use.

Look back on the left-hand side until you find the Plugins tab again and click on Installed Plugins to view your new plugin. From this page you can view, edit, change settings (on some) activate/deactivate and delete your installed plugins.

There you have it. You have a brand new WordPress plugin installed and activated.

Installing a Good Nice Looking WordPress Theme

Install theme on your blog with WordPress, you do not need to purchase theme this is very simple as like your smartphone just goes to Appearance and click on Theme at the left-hand side, search for your theme and simply install it.

When it comes to WordPress themes, the massive range of available options, although seemingly a good thing, is really a major problem for most people. This is because they are so overwhelmed with options, that they barely know where to start, let alone which option to go for.

In this article, therefore, I’m going to run through the main considerations that really matter when choosing a theme for a business WordPress website, and hopefully, this will make the process of making a decision easier for you.

So let me begin by discussing free versus paid WordPress themes.

Free vs. Paid WordPress Themes

If budget is an issue, the good news is that if you hunt around for a while, you can find free themes that are simply awesome and will do a great job for you. In fact, some of the best themes I’ve come across over the last year for my own clients have had both a free and paid version on offer, where the free version was excellent and did the job required without having to go for the paid option.

However, these high-quality free themes can often be as difficult to find as the proverbial ‘needle in a haystack’, with the vast majority of the offerings available being either of very poor quality or severely restricted in some way as to force you to buy the paid version. This is a commonly accepted marketing practice of course, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying.

So I believe that it is far better to approach the task of finding a good theme for your WordPress website has committed to purchasing a paid version. I favor this approach because the theme you choose will have a very significant influence on the conversion potential of your website when visitors land there, and hence, this is an aspect of your site’s functionality that you should not cheap out on.

Further, when you pay for a good quality, well-constructed, and highly-flexible WordPress theme, you are really buying a product that benefits from:

  • Regular updates
  • A unique design
  • Useful and detailed documentation
  • Ongoing support
  • No attribution links or another vendor branding

Make sure that it is Fully Responsive in design

In my opinion, this is the most important criteria to consider, as it is absolutely vital that your WordPress business website is easy to read, navigate and interact with on mobile devices, especially smartphones such as the Samsung Note and Apple iPhone.

I can’t stress the importance of this enough!

Go for simplicity

Never forget that purpose of your WordPress business website is to take its visitors successfully from your landing pages through to the conversion devices you have created for them. As such, the design of your site should revolve fully around the achievement of this result, with all features and functionality selected in the context of this conversion outcome.

Therefore, when selecting a WordPress theme, avoid those that seduce you with their vast array of boxes, sliding panels, interactive devices, complex tabbed layouts, dazzling image galleries and so on, as you will find that although inviting, most do not support your website’s business goals in any direct way.

Further, a website that is bogged down many of these memory-intensive devices will not only slow down the load times of your landing pages, they will also fail to be compatible across all browsers and devices. Both of these issues will work against your conversion efforts significantly.

I strongly suggest that you avoid intricate, flashy and function-heavy designs in favor of simple designs that load fast, are simple to modify to your custom requirements and are compatible with most browsers.

Go for a highly-flexible layout

A good WordPress theme should allow you to set up your business website exactly the way that you need it to be set up to support your ‘landing page to conversion’ funnel. As such, creating new sections and functions should be quick and easy to achieve as required.

The more formatting elements the theme allows you to customize to your own unique business website requirements, the better. The selected WordPress them should allow you to change everything from the fonts being used to the color schemes that apply to the site as a whole. This is essential, as you will want to tailor the theme to support your own branding, look and style, rather than adjust to that imposed by the theme that you have chosen.

Getting started in your search

Below are five WordPress theme vendors I have used in recent times to source themes for my own clients. Although the vendors in this list do not constitute a specific recommendation on my part, the fact is that I have been very happy with the themes I have sourced from them. So you might find the vendors on this list as a useful beginning point for your search.

Adding Pages and Posts

In WordPress, you can create both posts and pages. Pages in WordPress are static, which means that they never change unless you change them and they are always visible to your visitors. Posts, on the other hand, are always changing and aren’t always visible to your readers. WordPress automatically arranges your posts in reverse chronological order which means that the last post that you write will always appear first.

Some of your most important posts will be buried deep down in amongst all of those posts you’ve written and been hard to find. If you want your visitors to be able to easily find these post you can put them into categories which may help a bit. If you really want to make sure that your most important posts can be found, you can create a static page to put them on. On your static page, you can put links to your most important posts. Take a snippet from each post to put with its corresponding link. That way you can make sure your visitors find your most important posts.

You can also create static pages for your About Me and Contact pages.

 How to Create a WordPress Page

Sign into your WordPress Admin Panel by typing your blog address followed by a forward slash (/) then type wp-admin. (eg. yourblogname.com/wp-admin) You will then see your WordPress admin dashboard.

Once you are signed in, look down the left-hand side of the screen until you see the Page tab. Hover your mouse over the page tab. A drop-down menu will appear. Click on Add New. A new page will open.

On this page, you will see a place to put your page title and a place to put the body of your text. Click on the title box and type in the title you want your new page to have.

Click in the body area of your WordPress page and add the text you want to show on your page. You can either type directly in the body area or you can copy and paste from another document that you have created your body text in, such as Notepad.

By clicking on the links in the area above the body of your page, you can be creative with how your page will look. You can add some color to your page, insert an image, center text, etc. Click on the preview on the top right-hand side of your screen. You will be able to see what your page will look like. The preview window will open in a new tab in your browser. When you are satisfied that your page looks how you want it to look, you can click on Publish in the top right-hand side of your page.

If for whatever reason you have to stop working on your page and aren’t ready to publish it yet, you can save it as a draft. Click on Save Draft in the top right-hand side of your screen. When you finish your draft you can then click Publish.

Under Page Attributes on the left-hand side, you can choose if you want your new WordPress page to be a Parent Page or you can choose to put it as a subpage under another Parent Page that you have created.

WordPress posts are automatically arranged in reverse chronological order, which means that the last post that you write will always appear first.

How to Create a WordPress Blog Posts

Once you are signed in, hover over over the post tab on the left-hand side of your screen. A drop-down menu will appear. Click on Add New.

You will be taken to a new page where you can drop-down a new WordPress post. At the top of the page is a title box. Click inside the title box and insert your new blog post title in the box.

Under the title are of your post you will see the body area of the posting page. Click inside the body area and insert the body of your blog post. You can either type the post right in the body area or you can copy and paste a document from another program.

Above the body area, you will see an area where you can be creative with your WordPress posts. You can make your text bold, add color, center text, etc. If you know some HTML you can play around with the HTML as well.

On the right-hand side of the page, you will see a preview button at the top. Click on Preview. A new tab will open in your browser so you can view what your post will look like online. When you are satisfied that your post looks the way you want it to you can Publish it.

If you need to take a break from writing your post, you can click on save the draft on the right-hand side at the top and your post will be saved for you to work on later. You can publish your post when you are finished working on it. You can also choose whether you want your post to be made public or not.

Before you publish your WordPress posts, select a category and add some tags. Both of these can be found down the right-hand side of your post under Publish.
